The best person for this would

July 31, 2010 - 10:51 pm No Comments

The best person for this would not be a significant other, because friendships are longer lasting on the whole.

This friend need not be someone local, and depending on your preference local might not be better. Because it is someone that you don’t see as often, the temptation to run might not be as high. My first choice for someone to talk with is someone who lives 3000 miles away. It allows me to tell her what is going on without feeling like I need to run to her. When things are really bad, I go to my girlfriend who is a more constant presence in my life right now, and I can get immediate support ? like a hug. She is very understanding that I need to go call a friend a little later on.

The most important thing is to make sure that you have people who you can tell anything to. Without this, you will never find comfort when you are having problems.

Virtual Peaks diversifies

0 Comments | New Straits Times, Jul 30, 2010 | by Lynn Omar

VIRTUAL Peaks Group Bhd, a construction and property group, is diversifying into the hotel industry and it believes it can do the business better than rivals.

Executive chairman Datuk Hashimuddin Datuk Abdul Kadir thinks its latest international venture, the redevelopment of boutique resort and spa the Emerald Tulamben in Bali, Indonesia, could provide a return in five years.

“The hotel industry standard usually takes 15 years, but we are confident with our earnings in US dollar and costs in rupiah, we are able to recoup that quickly,” he told reporters at a briefing to announce the group’s purchase of the Bali resort.

The US$15 million (RM48 million) hotel will be operated by the group’s newly-formed hotel management company, Amanda International.

“Having one of our subsidiaries to manage the re-development of this project is good business acumen. It is not only cost-effective but also increases efficiency and our ability to control delivery and handover,” Hashimuddin added.

The Emerald Tulamben Resort and Spa was bought by Virtual Peaks in May and is expected to open for business in May 2011.

On expansion plans, Hashimuddin said the group may buy two hotels in Seminyan and Nusa Dua, both in Bali. It may also enter Indonesia’s construction and power sector, but he did not elaborate.

“Indonesia is the market to tap into, it has got a lot of potential and power after China and India,” he added.

Virtual Peaks’ construction arm, Perspec Prime (M) Bhd, has job orders of some RM100 million for the next 12 months. Of that, RM60 million is for projects in Pahang and Terengganu and the remaining in Bali.

So far, 30 per cent of the job has already started.

Perspec Prime will carry out the redevelopment of the Tulamben resort.

The group’s other divisions include highway concession, power development and trading.

How you reply to these questions

July 31, 2010 - 6:09 pm No Comments

How you reply to these questions will determine whether the job offer is really worth it:

Is this a full time, part time, temporary, or contract position? As obvious as it seems, you may be getting an offer different from what you originally applied. Try to get in writing the official offer — if it involves heavy-duty legal language consider contacting an employment specialist or an attorney for guidance.

Will you be paid hourly, per diem, by the job, or by an hourly salary? How many hours are you expected to work? Does the company pay overtime? Bonuses? Profit Sharing? Is this position with a “91″ operator [meaning lengthy crew duty days] or with a 135 operator [with limited duty days]?

Will you be a flight attendant? A cabin attendant? A host/hostess? Titles make a difference because the level of pay and training will depend on how high the position is.

The interior is ten

July 31, 2010 - 5:01 pm No Comments

The interior is ten per cent larger than last year, raising it into the compact category. The engine is ten per cent more powerful, yet weighs seven pounds less. Many cars are more beautiful like the Acura CL, Porche Boxter, and the VW Passat, but none can claim the luxury of a new, soft, but road holding suspension, ergonomic perfection (everything important is within reach), and with gas going up to three dollars a gallon, economical. I will choose the European flavored leaf green metallic paint with a leather-look beige interior. No other car comes close to the Honda Civic HX in planet-saving features (Ultra low emissions) and low cost (under $16,000). In October
the new Honda Civics are going on sale. I love the new modern design and the Civic Hybrid is a
marvel of automotive invention.

Then when Depakote’s

July 31, 2010 - 3:41 pm No Comments

Then when Depakote’s patent ran out, suddenly it wasn’t any good, either. Now Depakote ER (extended release) is the only way to fly.

This approach of reworking the old drug into longer-acting formats has worked for other drug companies, too. For example, GlaxoSmithKline has gone through the same dance with their formulations of bupropion for depression, evolving from Wellbutrin to Wellbutrin SR (sustained release) to Wellbutrin XL (extended release). Wyeth, seeing a good thing, followed the same path with venlafaxine antidepressant, going from Effexor to Effexor XR (extended release). It’s just an amazing coincidence how these new, suddenly-better drugs emerge just when the old drugs expire and face generic competition.

2. When they make us forget that the older drugs work just fine.

Since 1954 we’ve had effective anti-psychotic drugs to treat schizophrenia, but beginning in the 1990s a series of new anti-psychotics emerged, now called the “atypical” or “novel” anti-psychotics.

Press releases? Our local newspaper has printed

July 31, 2010 - 2:46 am No Comments

Press releases? Our local newspaper has printed
every single press release we have sent them?
church suppers, work being done on the church,
fundraising efforts, concerts, publicity for our church
cookbook, photos. We know the paper and what
they like and we give it to them.

3. Church Cookbook? Not only is this a great
collection of recipes, it?s a marketing piece for
our church as well. It tells our story and lets
people get comfortable with who we are as a
church. It?s also fun.

4. Church Suppers? Not only is this a fundraiser
but it gives people a non-threatening introduction
to our church?way less scary than walking in
cold on a Sunday morning. So again, it?s marketing.

5. Friendly ambassadors?Small churches (and
small businesses) grow because of relationships. Our church members all seem to be involved in
other activities in the community, and while they
don?t shove their religion down anyone?s throats,
they serve as ambassadors through their service
and caring.

These are just a few marketing techniques that we
have in place.

Slumberland springs a deal to buy up Dunlopillo arm

0 Comments | Evening News (Edinburgh, Scotland), Oct 23, 2002

SLUMBERLAND, the bed maker owned by Hilding Anders, has struck a deal to buy the Dunlopillo bed and mattress business in the UK and Ireland.

Dunlopillo, which generated turnover of 14 million pounds last year, supplies beds, pillows and mattresses to stores such as Harrods, John Lewis and Allders.

Under the deal – understood to be worth around $12m – Swedish-based Hilding Anders will buy the assets of the business and take on the rights to the Dunlopillo brand in the UK and Ireland. Following the sale Dunlopillo will change its name to Dunlop Latex Foam and concentrate on manufacturing latex foam for use inside mattresses and pillows. It will retain ownership of the Dunlopillo brand in 70 countries overseas.

The group will continue making latex foam products at its site in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, where it employs 320 staff, although around 80 people will transfer to Hilding Anders. Those moving will initially stay at the existing Dunlopillo premises but are expected to move to Slumberland’s facilities in Oldham, near Manchester, next year.

Richard Smith, chief executive of Dunlop Latex Foam, said: “The sale of the consumer products operation is a key factor in our long-term business strategy.

“We can now focus on the production of latex foam materials.”

Patrick Newstead, managing director of Hilding Anders UK, said: “The two bedding brands are complementary and appeal to different sectors of the market.

“Dunlopillo is a well-established luxury brand at the premium end, with an estimated 20 per cent market share in that sector

Experts want junk taken off food stamp menu

0 Comments | Bangor Daily News, Jul 28, 2010 | by MEG HASKELL

Four billion dollars. That’s how much Americans spend in food stamp dollars each year to buy sugar-sweetened, carbonated soft drinks. In Maine, it translates to about $2 million a year.

Imagine, says Maine pediatric dentist and public health advocate Jonathan Shenkin, how much healthful food could be purchased with those dollars.

“If you gave that money to the food banks, they’d bend over backward to get nutritious food for their clients,” he said.

Shenkin, who practices in Augusta and serves as president of the Maine Dental Association, is the co-author, along with Michael Jacobson of the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Science in the Public Interest, of an editorial that will appear in the September issue of the American Journal of Public Health.

The column already is posted online at http:// ajph.aphapublications.org/firstlook.shtml.

The two public health advocates argue that sugar-sweetened beverages such as soda have no nutritional value and no place in the taxpayer-funded food stamp market basket. They say the purchase of low-nutrient, high-calorie junk food in general should be actively discouraged within the program, and that federal policies should be developed to encourage the purchase of more healthful foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

“Overconsumption of excessively sweetened foods and beverages increases the risk of obesity, and people living in poverty are more likely to consume these nutrient-poor foods,” the authors state, citing a 2004 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition
